Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is an in-office medical procedure that uses intense light to zap unwanted hair to reduce the chances of it growing back. You can get laser hair removal treatment on any part of your body, but the most common places are:

  • Lip and chin
  • Bikini area
  • Under arms
  • Legs

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal targets the hair follicle. The laser heats up the hair follicle and destroys it, preventing further hair growth.

Treatment is quick, safe, and effective.

What is the YAG laser?

The YAG laser hair removal system is the most advanced laser treatment available for hair removal.

With the YAG laser, Dr. Hassan can treat large areas very quickly. And unlike other hair laser removal systems, the YAG laser can remove hair on all skin colors, even dark tones. Other types of lasers are only effective at removing dark hair on light skin tones.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

For the best results, Dr. Hassan recommends you avoid plucking and tweezing your hair before laser treatment so as not to disturb the hair follicle. Shaving is acceptable, however.

You also want to avoid sun exposure and the use of sunless tanning products for up to six weeks before treatment. Tanned skin may increase your risk of side effects from treatment, such as skin lightening.

What can I expect during treatment?

Dr. Hassan places protective eyewear over your eyes, then applies a special lotion to the treatment area. Your hair follicles absorb the lotion, which improves the laser’s accuracy and alleviates any discomfort you might feel.

He then places the laser wand on your skin and activates the laser, targeting your hair follicle to destroy it. As the laser works, you may feel some discomfort, described as a mild snap like a rubber band.

Treatment time depends on the area but can take a few minutes or more than an hour.

For best results, Dr. Hassan recommends four to six treatments every six weeks.

Is the hair gone for good?

Laser hair removal can help decrease hair growth for several years, especially after the multiple treatments Dr. Hassan recommends. But, hair may grow back. Routine maintenance laser hair treatment can help prevent regrowth.
