Scar Reduction Q & A
What is a scar?
Scars are a normal biological process that your body uses to heal wounds. When you damage your skin, your body produces collagen -- a protein that creates new skin -- to heal it.
The newly created skin can be a different color than the surrounding skin, creating what you call a scar. Sometimes the body produces too much collagen when healing a wound, creating a raised area, which is referred to as a hypertrophic scar.
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure Dr. Hassan performs using a pen-like instrument with thin, tiny needles. He uses the pen to place tiny punctures on the surface of your skin to stimulate collagen production.
Microneedling is used to treat numerous conditions, including:
- Acne and wound scars
- Stretch marks
- Wrinkles and fine lines
What is PRP?
PRP is a special blood product rich in growth factors and other proteins that Dr. Hassan uses to improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.
Dr. Hassan makes PRP with a small amount of blood taken from your arm, which he then places in a centrifuge to separate out the healing properties.
When PRP is applied to your skin, the natural growth factors and proteins enhance your body’s healing abilities and stimulate the production of collagen to form new skin.
PRP is not only used to treat scars. It’s also a cosmetic procedure that can reduce the signs of aging.
How do microneedling and PRP reduce scars?
Combining microneedling with PRP enhances your body’s ability to create new skin and reduce the appearance of scars.
Dr. Hassan first uses his microneedling pen to stimulate the skin on the scar to produce new collagen. He then applies the PRP to allow the growth factors and proteins to assist in the healing process.
After treatment, your skin remodels itself and tightens to reduce the scar tissue and appearance.
If you have concerns about acne scars or stretch marks, Dr. Hassan can help reduce their appearance. Call the office today or book an appointment online.
